Overall Opinion:
I gave GNC Total Lean Shake 3 out of 5 stars, so I think it’s a little better than average.
It is unique because it’s designed to be a meal replacement and not just a protein powder.
Not only does it have a protein blend, but also includes vitamins, minerals, and fiber.
It uses whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, and whey protein isolate.
I would’ve rated this supplement higher but the protein used isn’t the highest quality.
Whey protein isolate is a great protein but it’s used last in the blend, which means it could have very little of it actually in there.
Nonetheless, whey protein is easily digested and your body is able to utilize it right away.
The combination of 25 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber per shake may help keep you full and aid in overall weight loss.
This supplement also comes with a 14-day meal and exercise plan.
The suggestions are actually helpful and are a good basis for a weight loss jump-start.
It tastes great, even with water, and is easy to use.
I didn’t see any negative side effects and I could tell I didn’t feel as hungry when I drank 1-2 shakes per day.
The company also offers a 30-day money back guarantee, which is a definite perk.
Overall, if you drink 1-2 shakes per day, in combination with a healthy, reduced calorie diet, and exercise 3-4 times per week, this might be a great addition to your weight loss journey.
Detailed Opinion:
Ease of Use
GNC Total Lean Shake 25 is easy to use.
It blends up pretty quickly without much effort.
Mix 2 scoops of protein with 8 – 10 fl. oz. of cold water.
Shake or blend for about 15 seconds.
Make sure you use enough water because this shake is definitely very thick.
Taste
I tried this protein powder in the Rich Chocolate flavor.
I think it tastes pretty good, especially compared to other protein powders.
It’s sweet but not overwhelming.
The flavor reminds me of the individual hot chocolate packets (just cold instead of hot).
This is actually one of the only protein powders that I prefer with water, as opposed to milk or almond milk.
I’m surprised how good it tastes with only water, so that’s a definite perk.
When I used almond milk, it was just too thick, so I stuck with water.
This also helps keeps the calories and sugar low.
Macro Analysis
For the macros, this protein powder has 25 grams of protein, 3 grams of fat, and 17 grams of carbs per serving.
17 grams of carbohydrates definitely sounds like a lot but it includes 8 grams of fiber, which ends up making this shake only have 9 grams of net carbs per serving.
For 1 serving (2 scoops), it has 200 calories.
200 calories is also a bit higher than average, but keep in mind this product is meant to be a meal replacement and not just a protein powder.
The product recommends you have 2 shakes per day (4 total scoops).
That would leave you with 50 grams of protein and 16 grams of fiber, which will help keep hunger at bay and aid in potential weight loss.
Ingredient Drilldown
GNC Total Lean Shake 25 has protein along with some additional ingredients to make it suitable for a meal replacement shake.
It has a protein blend consisting of Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Concentrate, and Whey Protein Isolate, totaling 25 grams of protein per serving (2 scoops).
Unfortunately, whey protein concentrate and milk protein concentrate are inferior to whey protein isolate.
I would’ve much rather seen purely whey protein isolate.
However, whey protein in general is quickly and easily digested in the body.
Whey protein may help with lean muscle growth, along with weight loss because you don’t feel as hungry due to the protein.
This protein has 8 grams of fiber to also help keep you full during the day.
In particular, it contains oat beta-glucan, which is a naturally occurring low-glycemic soluble fiber found in oat bran that helps support normal, healthy blood glucose levels.
It has a blend of vitamins and minerals including: Biotin, Folic Acid, Manganese Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Tricalcium Phosphate, Sodium Ascorbate, Chromium Chloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Ferric Orthophosphate, dl-alpha Tocopheryl Acetate, Thiamin Hydrochloride, Cupric Oxide, Vitamin A Acetate, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Dimagnesium Phosphate, Maltodextrin (glucose polymers), Potassium Iodide, Niacinamide, Calcium Carbonate, Cyanocobalamin.
This protein powder has milk and soybeans, so steer clear if you’re allergic to either of those.
Side Effects
While taking GNC Total Lean Shake 25 I didn’t experience any negative side effects.
I’m definitely happy about this!
I felt good and I could tell I felt full for longer but without feeling super bloated.
It does contain milk and soybeans, so just be careful if you’re allergic or sensitive to either.
The sweetener is sucralose, which may cause a little bloating or belly pain in some people.
Best Uses
This protein shake is best used as a meal replacement and for those looking to boost weight loss.
It’s more than just a protein shake and includes 22 vitamins and minerals, 8 grams of fiber, and a protein blend to help keep you full for longer.
This product comes with a 14 day, 1500 calorie meal plan and exercise program to jumpstart weight loss.
A lot of companies include these plans that leave much to be desired but this one is actually useful and has some good suggestions for meals and exercises.
It even includes food substitutions to help you stay within your daily calorie limit.
Drinking 1-2 meal replacements per day, in conjunction with a calorie-controlled meal plan and exercising 3-4 days per week, will definitely help boost weight loss and aid in weight management.
Price/Value
The price of a 1.83 lb container of GNC Total Lean Shake 25 is $29.99.
You end up paying 7.49 cents per gram of protein with this protein powder.
This is about average for a protein powder, maybe a tad higher than usual.
I think it’s a good value for the price though, especially if you’re looking for a meal replacement.
However, if you take the recommended 2 shakes per day, the container will only last 8 short days.
Guarantee
GNC offers a 30-day money back guarantee on their products.
If you’re not satisfied with an item, you can return it within 30 days of the order date for a full refund (minus shipping and handling).
I’m really happy to see a guarantee offered by GNC; I love when companies stand behind their products.
